Buy an apple for Equality
There are dozens of symbols for the LGBTQ (or sometimes called QUILTBAG+) communities, but so many people are in the closet and are afraid to show their support. But the apple is a symbol of education, and that is what we are trying to accomplish. If everyone who supports equality, whether you fall along the spectrum of sexual minority or if you’re a supporter, buys an apple on the same day our hope is that it will make people notice that there are more of us than they think.
No one benefits from this financially, other than the store you buy it from and their suppliers. So you can buy it from a local farmer or a big box store. This is not to make money or for fame. We just want to see people turn their heads.
There are several reasons we chose to use the apple for this:
- symbol of education
- available in most places
- you don’t have to proclaim its for QUILTBAG+ rights
- its a symbol you can eat!
If you’re not into apples, you can pass it off to a homeless person and improve their day.
If you’re REALLY into apples, you can buy a lot of apples to make up for the QUILTBAG+ youth who are out on the streets, or for the people who didn’t get this message. Or you could just buy a whole bag because you like apples.
Buy one if you’re queer. Buy one if you’re not queer but support our rights. Buy one if you’re asexual or polyamorous or genderfluid. Buy one if you don’t know what you are but you know that its not right to treat someone differently because of who they love or how they see themselves. Buy one on your lunch hour or after school. Buy one if you’re out and proud. Buy one if you’re in the closet and just don’t say anything.
And if someone buys an apple and they’re not a supporter, don’t tell them. Anyone can buy an apple. Anyone can be queer. Anyone can be a supporter. An apple is just and apple. A person is just a person. But there are a lot of people out there and apples are in season, so let’s make this a statement!
